Can a child simply outgrow VUR?

Can a child simply outgrow VUR?

Many children outgrow VUR by age five. Whether your child will outgrow VUR depends on several factors, including the grade of the VUR.

However, once your child has been diagnosed with VUR you will need to remain on the lookout for fevers or other symptoms of UTIs. Additionally your healthcare practitioner may choose to have further testing on a regular basis at the hospital, to follow the progress and to ensure the health of your child’s kidneys. If your child has been diagnosed with VUR, the chart below can give you an idea of the chances of your child outgrowing the condition in any given year.

  1. The yearly rate of reflux resolution remains constant for each group
  2. No difference shown by age or laterality (unilateral/bilateral), therefore these categories were combined
  3. Estimates only apply to the time diagnosis and are not age specific
